I think the last time I did a review of an entire designer collection was when Jeremy Scott débuted his McDonald’s themed capsule collection for Moschino and I couldn’t stop raving about how I had to have the French fries case—sadly because I upgraded to the iPhone 6 I can no longer use this piece of fashionable technology. But whatever, I digress.
Felipe Oliveira Baptista showed his FW15 collection for Lacoste on Valentine’s Day at the famed Lincoln Center tents and let me tell you, his runway made bearing the freezing cold that day all the much better. The collection was a sort of nod to Wes Gordon’s The Royal Tenenbaums while paying homage to the original Lacoste brand started by Mr. René himself, yet making sure all the 70s vintage inspired pieces had a contemporary and appropriately modern feel to them. The clothes played on the idea of strong contrasts: structured sport wear juxtaposed with different lengths, strong bold colors versus neutral and subtle tones, solid fabrics and art deco inspired prints.
Mr. Bapstisa is a creative genius and the brand’s decision to appoint him creative director for Lacoste in 2010 is one that has brought nothing but well deserved success and praise amongst even the toughest critic in the fashion spectrum.
